Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor (growth) that consists of cells from the prostate gland. The tumor usually grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years. During this time, the tumor produces little or no symptoms or outward signs (abnormalities on physical examination). As the cancer advances, however, it can spread beyond the prostate into the surrounding tissues (local spread). Moreover, the cancer also can metastasize (spread even farther) throughout other areas of the body, such as the bones, lungs, and liver. Symptoms and signs, therefore, are more often associated with advanced prostate cancer.

A disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the penis. Penis cancer (also known as Carcinoma of the Penis) risk can be increased with the infection of Human Papillomavirus.

Men who were not circumcised at birth may also have a higher risk of developing penile cancer.

Penile cancer: the facts

*There are around 400 cases of penile cancer every year in the United Kingdom. By contrast, there are some 35,000 cases of prostate cancer in the UK each year.

*One of the rarest of cancers, it accounts for an average of 100 deaths a year, equivalent 0.07 per cent of the total for all cancers.

*Some 86 per cent of cases occur in men aged 50 and over.

*Potential causes include smoking, a weakened immune system and poor hygiene.
